SPOTLIGHT: Hands on: Neonode N2

Neonode's N2 feels a little dated to us and it is: the phone was first revealed more than a year ago at 3GSM in Barcelona. Still, it's not yet out in the States, so it might be worth taking a look at the tiny, swipe-happy, touchscreen device. Without a doubt, it's definitely the smallest smartphone we've ever seen. Head on over to FierceWireless to scope the hands-on slideshow.

Divitas builds a bridge

Communicating on both WiFi and 3GSM networks is one thing--doing it as you pass calls seamlessly between the two is something else entirely. Divitas has released the Divitas Mobile Convergence Platform, a system that the company says will work with cell phones, WiFi-phones, dual-mode phones and softphones, to form a single unified telephone system. The product is aimed at enterprise customers that want to expand the management of their PBX beyond the confines of the traditional phone. With a price of $5,495 (including a 10-user license) the new Divitas platform should offer many companies the opportunity to test that theory.

For more on the new product:
- read the article at eWeek

3GSM Congress brings new cell uses

A phone's no longer a phone, it seems, especially when the phone is attached to a 3GSM network. Dictating text messages, requesting map routes and updating social networking pages are some of the functions that handset vendors and service providers believe users should be clamoring for. On the other end of the scale are phones that recognize the feature overload experiences by many users; these phones have as few as six brightly-colored buttons for simplified device navigation. More or fewer buttons, richer or simpler features--regardless of the direction taken, it's a ways from "just a phone."

For more on the evolving handset:
- read the article at CIO Today

Fring brings VoIP to 3GSM phones

A former co-general manager of instant messenger company ICQ has formed a new company, Fring, to deliver VoIP services on 3GSM phones. The Fring service, based on the Skype API, is currently available on any 3GSM phone--as long as the phone is a Nokia Series 60 device. Fring says that it plans to have software available for other devices, including Windows Mobile phones, in the future. The service allows users to have address books based on Skype, to call Skype and other VoIP services and to call land-line phones through Skype Out. One huge question mark in Fring's plans: carriers' willingness to let an application cut them out of call-based revenues.

For more on Fring's future:
- read the article at Network World
